Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi
Whakatū Marae has a Hangi Pit situated at the back of our Wharekai.
There are a number of reasons why this pit is used e.g. to accompany bookings; groups, fundraising, private functions, celebration, marae functions etc. Whakatū Marae has a restriction hireage of the hangi-pit. Due to the high level of health and safety risk, we reserve this request for iwi functions and those who have a personal affiliation with Whakatū Marae.

Guidelines of use
Marae equipment
Due to loss and theft, use of the marae hangi equipment is not to be taken off site we encourage groups to clean up and return marae equipment to its correct place (Hangi Shed) after used.
Groups will need to bring in their own equipment from wood, sacks, irons, baskets etc

- Booking the hangi pit gives a group/persons access to the pit only. If you require use of the Wharekai/Mauriora this will be a separate booking and cost. Refer to Status listings above for differences.
- Once the hangi pit is lit, it must be supervised at all times. We have had incidents in the past where this has not happened and things have been detrimental to our kaumatua residing in our flats.
- We ask that groups/persons using the hangi pit, please contact the Fire service to inform them that you will be using the pit. In most cases they will waiver a need to report this however, it can depend on who you speak to as to whether they feel it a necessity.
- Groups should find the hangi pit clean and ready to use. If not, please do let us know before you proceed to use it. We do inform all groups that it is expected the hangi pit must be left clean and immaculate. Where this is not done, future access may be declined.
